Calendar of Festivals 2008
We invite you to visit cultural events and festivals of Kyrgyzstan. Be a bystander or even take a part in of equestrian competitions in different kinds of national equestrian games, which are hundreds years old; learn how to make national felts and try to do it yourself – make ala-kyiyz, shyrdaks, panels with ancient or national symbology and motif or create your own; enjoy striking and colorful folklore shows. For connoisseurs of national culture and traditions there is a festival of hunting birds where you will evaluate this old tradition in full measure.
Festival Balajan (Festival of happy childhood)
Date: July, 5 Saturday
Place: Jaychy Area (southern lakeshore of Issyk-Kul)
Program: Display of Kyrgyz national rites (lying to the cradle of the baby, celebration of the first baby’s steps etc). National games for children (chikit chabuu, jooluk tashtamai, ak terek). Drawing, song and dance contests. National horse games.
Felt Festival
Date: July, 5 Saturday
Place: Kara-Too village, (near Kochkor)
Program: Display the techniques of dying wool and manufacturing felt and national souvenirs; an explanation of patterns and ornaments used in traditional crafts; exhibition and sale of felt items and other handicrafts; weaving straw wall hangings (chiy); demonstration of yurt erecting.
Cleaning up at Son-Köl Lake
Date: July, 12-13 Saturday, Sunday
Place: Son-Köl Lake (northern lakeshore, 100 km from Kochkor Village)
Program: Cleaning up; national group games (arkan tartmai, jooluk tashtamai and others); folklore show; display of making national felt and woven items; song contest; campfire; horseback riding (optional).
Kyrgyz National Cuisine Festival
Date: July, 19-20 Saturday, Sunday
Place: Karool-Dobo village, Chon-Kemin valley
Program: Demonstration of cooking and testing of traditional courses from the oldest times involving participants. Explanation of recipes and stages of dish cooking. Traditional music and national games.
National Horse Games Festival
Date: July, 26 Saturday
Place: Sarala-Saz jailoo (65 km northwest of Kochkor Village)
Program: National horse games; Folklore show; Kyrgyz cuisine; exhibition and sale of handicrafts.
Festival of Folklore and Cuisine
Date: July, 27 Saturday
Place: Kok-Jaiyk area,Jeti-Ögüz Gorge (55km from Karakol)
Program: Display of making felt; contest of folklore groups (traditional music, songs and dance); national cuisine contest (Dungan, Kyrgyz, Russian-Ukrainian, Tartar, Uigur-Uzbek cuisines); hiking in Kök-Jaiyk; cleaning up of Kok-Jayik outskirts (optional)
Kyrgyz National Wedding Ceremony
Date: August, 2 Saturday

Program: National horse games; folklore show; demonstration of wedding ceremony with the escorting of bride to new nomad’s camp; tasting of Kyrgyz cuisine.
Birds of Prey Festival
Date: August, 9-10 Saturday, Sunday
Place: Manjyly-Ata area (Issyk-Kul Lake)
Program: Demonstration of falconry; tasting national dishes in a yurt camp; folklore show; exhibition and sale of handicrafts and souvenirs; visiting sacred places described in local legends.
Kyrgyz Kochu Festival
Date: August, 16-17 Saturday, Sunday
Place:From the southern shore of Son-Kul lake to Kurtka Village
Program: Traditional annual moving of households from high-altitude mountain pastures-jailoo to valleys. National games (kyz kuumai, tiyun enmei, er enish etc). National music and cuisine join in a demonstration of dismantling a yurt.
Kyrgyz National Wedding Ceremony
Date: August, 23 Saturday
Place: Bel-Tam (southern lakeshore of Issyk-Kul)
Program: TFolklore show; demonstration of wedding ceremony with the escorting of bride to new nomad’s camp; tasting of Kyrgyz cuisine.
Kyrgyz National Ceremonies and Traditions Festival
Date: August, 23-24 Saturday Sunday
Place: Outskirts of Middle Ages Caravanserai Tash-Rabat
Program: Display of Kyrgyz national traditions and rites (wedding ceremony, lying to the cradle of the baby, celebration of the first baby’s steps etc). Playing on national musical instruments. Excursion to Tash-Rabat Caravanserai.
